a ways to go. there is so much to do but we have accomplished quite a bit. i know former mayor brown, who is not here yet, but he will be dashing in, let him know i said this. if he were the president of the united states we would be the 186th country it ratify cdal i say that because i know he and his history was the very first to sign up our city, it pass the ordinance when he was the mayor, to make sure we were on the road by abiding by those principles and then when i had a chance as director of public works i took up the helm for that department. you know, those years, they were really blue collar attitudes in public works, but we found the women leaders that we could acknowledge and promote and it became an even better agency for that very reason. so i want to again acknowledge that history. we still have a lot to do since our country has yet to ratify these principles. i hope that we will get closer and closer to do that or if not do it now, it is something that i think we've really been embarrassed about as a country not to do this on a national level. but i join you today

, 2012. good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. we begin in washington. there is a new sense of urgency to avert a looming fiscal crisis. it's the so-called fiscal cliff a combination of tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to kick in next year. both democrats and republicans are talking compromise but we have heard this all before. and in the just released report from the nonpartisan congressional budget office predicts dire consequences unless it's resolved. this mornings stocks in asia dipped on concern over the crisis. tokyo's nikkei and hong kong hang seng were down 1% and wall street investors are selling. the dow jones industrials were down 434 points the last two days. today president obama in his first post-election comment will address the nation's fiscal problems. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on all of this. susan, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. you know, not everyone believes that the consequences of going over this fiscal cliff are going to be so severe. people are talking about a global financial crisis, another u.s. credit d

election in a few months in massachusetts. scott brown just defeated, he could turn around and run for that seat. it's not a slam dunk. i think that -- >> which would give the republicans -- >> yeah. so going to be considerations if he picks somebody from the senate to fill these slots. >> leon panetta, likely to depart. who might remace him? >> i think it's a tough job to find a good replacement. there's all kinds of people who have been in top positions, mullen, who has been the joint chiefs of staff. there are people who get mentioned. but the thing i think with the panetta decision and the timing is sort of critical there. if we're facing the potential for a military showdown with iran, we're facing a lot of other iran situations, a lot of other tense situations around the world, it's quite possible that panetta gets drafted to stay a little bit longer until some of these situations are worked out. tim geithner is another example, treasury secretary. while we have a fiscal cliff situation, this debt limit crisis a few months after that, i think with geithner, it's also an issue

. i covered the whitman and brown campaign and whitman outspent jerry brown by six times and she lost really bad. by 6 points at least. and that -- in california, it never matters if there are billionaires money doesn't matter in california elections but in national elections it always has. the traditional wisdom has now been bucked by this particular election. >> eliot: right. i think of the national spending patterns as well. you saw the sheldon adelsons. it is not clear to me all of his money, he backed a sequence of losers. somebody ed he was 0-9, all of the money simply bounced off of voter's consciousness. what will those funders say next time? >> you would have to ask sheldon adelson what he thought? i did meet some of these characters at some of the conventions. had a nice long talk with foster friess but what i think they're getting is somebody to listen to them, a place to put their money where their mouth is and where their values are. they may value that more than winning any particular race. >> eliot:

, moderate republicans. on the republican side, scott brown who probably would have been one of these people who linda lingle in hawaii. she would have been an asset for the kind of congress that pulls things together. she was a terrific candidate in ran a great campaign. running as a republican in a democratic state, the president's home state this particular year just rang up no sale. heather wilson in new mexico is another one like that. moderate republicans running in blue states all lost. look at their counterparts. democratic moderates running in red states. he did manage to win in indiana in a non-democratic wave year. it was probably impossible in 2010. but in a relatively level playing field environment, it was still something. the fact that democrats were still in the hunt in north dakota -- i have not looked to see what the president's number was there. it was pretty impressive. john tester, the other one that is still up in the air, fairly moderate. it looks like he may survive. tim kaine won in virginia. the republicans, their brand is hurting them -- their candidates -- in cert
